Leaders Move People from Here to There

August 17th, 2010

Summarizing the Global Leadership Summit August 5 and 6, 2010

On August 5 and 6, 2010, I had the opportunity to be

a part of the Global Leadership Summit put on by

Willow Creek Community Church (a mega-church in

the Chicago, IL area with a mission to raise up leaders).

Some of you may have been on-site in Chicago, others

of us took part by being at one of the various satellite

sites across North America.

Here is what I learned and would like to share with you:

Bill Hybels opened the conference with these four challenges to leaders:

·         We need to move people from here to there.

·         We must have fantastic people (and they all need to be in the right seats).

·         We need to celebrate achievements and milestones along the journey from

here to there so we don’t get discouraged and give up; and

·         We need to be tuned in and silent enough to hear Whispers from God (Bill’s new book)

that will take you to places you never dreamed possible.

In addition to Hybels, other key note speakers were:

Jim Collins, author of Good to Great discussing his new book,

How the Mighty Fall

·         When do you know if you’re sick on the inside?

·         The signature of mediocrity is chronic inconsistency

·         Why are all of the 18 Built to Last companies still there?  The struggle—the need to endure

·         The most enduring business models do not compromise their core values.

They:  Preserve their Core and Stimulate Progress  They:  Keep their Values and Change their Practices

Tony Dungy had one gem I can’t forget:

Consider how a 30 second conversation with a mentor can change your life.

Andy Stanley, a church leader with a passion for raising

up the next generation of leaders says we all hope problems

and tensions go away.  But, actually within organizations there are:

·         Problems that shouldn’t be solved; and

·         Tensions that shouldn’t be resolved

·         Progress depends not on the resolution of these tensions,

but on the successful management of these tensions

Jeff Manion, a church leader in Ada, Mi shared with us

the concepts from his new book, The Land Between:

Finding God in Difficult Transitions.  We can all relate to

how difficult transition is.  Many of us are currently in

The Land Between.  When you are in the Land Between,

your heart is in danger.  The Land Between can be fertile

soil for Transformational Growth, or it can crush your

spirit leading to emotional meltdown.  Will you become

deeply embittered and acidic, or can this pain be used

for redemptive purposes?

Daniel Pink in his new book, Drive:  The Surprising

Truth about What Motivates Us says people respond

to three key motivators:

·         Autonomy

·         Mastery

·         Purpose

Self-direction leads to engagement, and we are

seeing the rise of the Purpose Motive.

Jack Welsh was highly engaging, extremely candid and

altogether funny during his interview with Bill Hybels.

Here are his tips:

·         As a leader you need to energize people

·         Excite people about the mission and vision you have articulated

·         Unless the leader feels the fire, it is hard to pass on

·         Leaders must build confidence in others.  When people have self-confidence, then they will act

·         Hiring is hard, succession is brutal.  Don’t be surprised if the longshots are the most successful.

·         Biggest failure:  Going too slow

T D Jakes closed the conference by reminding us that

leadership is always a transition.  We are always needing

to get from HERE to THERE.

·         Make sure your own lamp of passion does not go out on the journey

·         Passion is the fuel that will make the engine go.
